Idler roller

Idler rollers are non-powered cylindrical components used in conveyor systems to support the belt and the material being transported. They minimize friction, prevent the belt from sagging, and help maintain proper alignment (tracking) to ensure smooth material flow.

Description

Common Types of Idler Rollers
Depending on their position and function within a conveyor system, idler rollers are categorized into several types:
Carrying Idlers: Located on the “load” side of the conveyor, these support the belt and the material being moved.
Troughing Idlers: Usually consist of three or five rollers angled (typically 20°, 35°, or 45°) to form a “U” shape, which increases load capacity and prevents spillage.
Impact Idlers: Positioned at loading points, these are often reinforced with rubber discs or rings to absorb the shock of falling material and protect the belt.
Return Idlers: Located on the underside of the conveyor, they support the empty belt as it travels back to the start.
Flat Return Idlers: A single horizontal roller that keeps the belt from stretching or sagging.
V-Return Idlers: Two rollers arranged in a “V” shape to provide better tracking and stability for high-tension belts.
Training/Self-Aligning Idlers: These feature a pivoting mechanism that automatically adjusts the belt’s position if it begins to drift off-center, preventing edge damage.
